There are some books that systematically present the grammar of a language. There are other books that explain how people really use a language. This book is both. It goes through the detail of the grammar like a traditional textbook. But it's also got all the tips and tricks that are useful for remembering all those details. Make ho mistake, Italian is a wonderful, beautiful language; it's also cranky and idiosyncratic. Every rule, it seems, has at least one commonly used exception and five variations only used in certain circumstances. It is both enriched and complicated by its history.This is your guidebook through that history. I searched for a book like this for some time. If you have been a student of Spanish as well, you may be familiar with the beloved classic Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish. Well, look no further: you've found it.But it doesn't stop there. Italian is a language full of proverbs and idioms. This book also presents 1000 of these idioms, introduced at logical places in the text. I'm undecided whether this is a good thing or not. On the one hand, presenting them together with related points of grammar is interesting and may be memorable; on the other,mite can make it hard to just go in and brush up on a point of grammar, say before a test.Regardless, the book is an amazing tour through the rich history and maddening complexity that is the Italian language. It's also an incredible bargain to boot; the author could charge three or four times the price and it would still be a bargain. Better buy it now before he changes his mind!
